There are 3 systemic therapies available for treatment of onychomycosis: itraconazole, terbinafine, and fluconazole.[19] Itraconazole and terbinafine are approved by the FDA for this indication; fluconazole is not. Ciclopirox, efinaconazole, and tavaborole are the 3 topical therapies for onychomycosis approved by the FDA.[5-7] Ciclopirox was the first available topical agent, receiving FDA approval in 1999. Efinaconazole and tavaborole received FDA approval for treatment of onychomycosis in June 2014 and July 2014, respectively.[20]
